Channel 13 News, “The Hillsborough County School Superintendent has called for a special task force to review existing school procedures for special need students.  The internal review comes after the death of two special need students.” Dalia Dangerfield, Reporter.

Isabella (Bella) Herrera died after choking and losing consciousness aboard a school bus.  Due to the protocol stated in the school driver handbook, the bus driver did not phone 911, but instead phoned a dispatcher.

On Thursday the board members of the school decided to revise the policy, “They need to err on the side of caution, that’s the overriding message to the employees, to err on the side of caution and to make sure they are addressing the needs at the immediate moment.” said April Griffin, board member.

“The Herrera family is obviously relieved that the school district has finally replaced its inexplicable policy that prohibited school bus drivers from calling 911, a policy that defied logic and common sense.” said Steve Maher, the Herrera family’s attorney
